According to law, Queensland AU and other jurisdictions require ID verification for online sales of knives and other age restricted items. We've make a free Shopify Flow template for you to prompt customers to verify their ID if their order is shipping to Queensland.

However, this template can be customized thanks to Shopify Flow's flexible no-code automation builder. You can add additional shipping locations that should require verification, or even limit ID verification to only specific products or locations.

Getting Started

This guide assumes you need ID verification for orders shipping to a specific location, in this case Queensland AU, which has ID verification requirements for online sales. But this template can be modified to meet your needs if you need verification for different states.

Install Shopify Flow

Start by downloading and installing Shopify Flow. It’s available for free on all Shopify plans.

Then after you install the app you'll be able to build powerful workflows to automate tasks in your Shopify store.

Download the Workflow Template

You can download your template to save yourself time from building it by hand. This link below will download the workflow file to your device. Then we'll show you how to import it into your Shopify store.

Import the Flow

Now you're ready to open Shopify Flow, and import the template.

Within Shopify Flow, click Import and upload the queensland-age-restriction compliance-check.flow file you just downloaded.

After importing, you should see a new workflow added called Queensland Age Restriction Compliance Check to your Shopify Flow app.

Install Real ID

Next, install Real ID to your Shopify store which will automatically verify your customer's IDs and make sure they're of age via the Create ID check action on the workflow.

Real ID comes with a risk free 14 day trial, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Set your minimum age in Real ID

Next, set Real ID to require 18+ for all verified IDs. Open the Settings page in Real ID and navigate to the Rules tab, then specify that your minimum age for customers is 18.

Real ID will use the date of birth field on the verified ID to determine if the customer is of age for the purchase.

(optional) Brand your ID checks, use your email address and set up automatic reminders

To build trust with your customers and increase your ID check completion rates, follow these optional steps:

1. Use your theme and brand
2. Use your email address to deliver ID checks to customers
3. Enable automatic reminders

Here's a sample introduction paragraph you can use in the app to notify customers why their ID is required for their order:

In compliance with Queensland's new knife sale regulations (effective September 1, 2024), we are required to verify that you are 18 years or older before processing your order for controlled items.

Please have a valid form of identification ready. Acceptable forms of ID include:

• Australian photo driver's license
• Australian or overseas passport
• Australian proof of age card

Your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain community safety is appreciated. Thank you for shopping with us.

Activate the Flow

To enable the workflow, open it, and then click Turn on to enable the workflow. New orders shipping to Queensland with at least one product tagged with restricted or in the restricted category will automatically be held and ID check delivered to the customer.

If you have a different categorization system for age restricted products, you can modify the conditions in the workflow to match your policies.
