Shopify's new app blocks allow for easy modification of checkout and customer account pages.
Previously, modifying the checkout process required changes to liquid templates, which were error-prone and required developer intervention. App blocks now solve these issues by hosting third-party extensions on Shopify's infrastructure, ensuring smooth scaling and reducing conflicts between apps.
Benefits of Switching to Checkout Extensibility
For Plus merchants, the biggest benefit is the ability to require ID verification during the checkout process. With Real ID and Shopify Checkout Extensibility, you can place the ID check on the billing or shipping pages to increase conversion rates.

How to Test Checkout Extensibility
Create a Shopify Development store for free and enable the Checkout Extensibility Preview. Install Real ID on your test store and use it in test mode for free.
The ID verification app blocks will work the same as they do on a paid store.
Upgrade Information
Shopify anticipates Checkout Extensibility to be available for all stores starting December 2024. However, app blocks in the Checkout page will not be included. No immediate changes are required for your store.
